Now that I’ve been exclusively breastfeeding my daughter for 7+ months, I know how to boost my breast milk supply instantly! The tips below are the exact ones I used to grow my Breast milk stash to over 2,700 ounces in the first 3 months!
1.Stress affects your milk supply
You may be wondering, does stress affect your milk supply? Believe it or not, stress can be a huge culprit as to why your breast milk supply is low.
As moms, we often feel overwhelmed with the day-to-day! Recovering from giving birth, adjusting to caring for a newborn and other children, paired with sleepless nights can all be very overwhelming. All of this really does take a toll on your body, emotionally and physically. It can also impact your breast milk supply! Studies have shown that when we stress we tend to not take care of ourselves in terms of staying hydrating and maintaining a well-balanced diet! This is what’s killing your milk supply mama! Studies have also found that when we stress our bodies respond to stress by releasing cortisol, adrenaline, and norepinephrine. Overtime the release of these hormones can have a negative effect on your emotional and physical state!
I know it’s easier said than done, but try to make a conscious effort to minimize stress when possible. We have to take care of ourselves!
2. 4 Easy ways to minimize stress
- 5 Minute Meditation, Taking a few minutes out of the day to medicate can make a huge difference in your stress levels. Scheduling a few quick meditation sessions throughout the day is a great place to start! There are tons of apps on the market now that help with guided meditations.
- Get some fresh air, Sometimes getting out of the house and a change of scenery really does the trick. I know we have all been in the house due to covid, but getting out for some fresh air really does the body and mind some good!
- Exercise, creating a daily exercise routine is a good act of self-care and really helps to keep your stress level down.
- Self-care, carve out time to do something that makes you happy each week. Whether it’s time alone or a girl’s trip to the local nail salon! Take some time for you mama
3.Getting Enough Rest
I can’t even begin to count the number of times that other parents told my husband and me about losing sleep once the baby arrived. I knew this was true, but I also knew that it didn’t have to be that way entirely!
To be quite honest, I got the most sleep when my daughter was a newborn. Newborns need to sleep on average 14 – 17 hours a day over a 24 hour period! With this in mind, I used that to my advantage and vowed to sleep when the baby sleeps!
I stopped doing choirs, running errands, cooking, or whatever else I could find to do while she was sleeping. My husband and I took turns caring for her so we both could get an adequate amount of sleep!
Not getting enough sleep will impact your milk supply more than you think! Get some rest mama!
4. Staying Hydrated!
Producing breastmilk takes a lot out of you! Staying hydrated is an absolute must when trying to boost your breast milk supply! The amount of liquid you put into your body affects the amount of milk you produce!
When breastfeeding, your body releases a hormone called oxytocin, which causes you to feel thirsty! This is your bodies way of telling you to stay hydrated so you can continue to produce more breast milk!
If possible grab yourself a large water bottle that you can fill up each morning. remember to drink between every nursing session and more! Having my water bottle around and near me at all times really helped me stay on track with staying hydrated!
5. Power Pump
What exactly is power pumping? Power pumping is a simple technique that is designed to mimic a baby’s cluster feeding. What’s cluster feeding? Cluster feeding is when the baby feeds for shorter periods of time but more frequently. So when you power pump you’re sending the same signals to your body as if your baby was actually cluster feeding.
Power pumping encourages your body to produce more breastmilk. Power pumping tricks your body into thinking baby needs more milk, which in turn means your body produces more milk!
Power pumping the first week after giving birth is a great way to jump-start your milk supply. My initial goal was to exclusively pump when I had my daughter, even though things didn’t go as planned and I ended up nursing her and pumping. I still utilized power pumping to help increase, my breast milk supply!
6. Sunflower Lecithin
If you’re exclusively pumping and not taking sunflower lecithin you need to get some ASAP!
Sunflower lecithin doesn’t necessarily increase your milk supply. Lecithin is a good supplement for treating and preventing clogged milk ducts. Lecithin also helps with making breastmilk less sticky, which helps with the flow of your milk. Sunflower Lecithin also helps with releasing your milk faster.
Lecithin is believed to be a fat emulsifier that helps with the flow of your milk, as I mentioned before it helps make the milk less sticky
I swear by sunflower lecithin for preventing and treating clogged ducts, and helping with the flow of my milk when pumping or nursing.
7. Breast MAssages
This was definitely a technique that I wish I did early on! It’s true, massaging your breast before and during nursing and pumping sessions helps with the flow of your breastmilk.
A good rule of thumb to remember is to massage your breast a few minutes before pumping or nursing. This encourages your milk production glands to output more breast milk.
Study shows that frequent breast massages within the first year really helps to increase your breast milk supply. There are many ways to massage your breast! You can opt for using your hands, or you can use a breast massager tool to help with the process.
How To Massage your breast when breastfeeding
Learning a few good massaging techniques that you can use right before pumping or nursing is a good idea. There are many techniques and ways to massage your breast. You can do so manually ( with your hands) or you can use a breast massager. I did both and saw a significant difference in my letdown when I did.
I eventually started to use a Lavie Massager. This massager was a game-changer for me. I’m someone who is prone to getting clogged ducts, so this massager has been a huge staple in my breastfeeding journey. I use it anytime I have a clogged duct, and I also use it a few times throughout the day before pumping to keep my milk flow going!
8. Create a Routine
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU GO TOO LONG BETWEEN PUMPING?
Whether your pumping or nursing, going too long in-between sessions will definitely slow down your milk production. Every mom has to figure out her sweet spot for how many times to pump a day and for how long. Figuring this out will help you maintain your supply.
Truthfully, nursing and pumping can be time-consuming but very rewarding. Coming up with a routine is a great way to prevent those long gaps in between sessions. Breast Engorgement isn’t fun, and after a while, it will start to affect your breast milk production, sometimes droping your supply output significantly.
For me I started to feel overwhelmed with pumping and remembering when I needed to pump. So I created a pump schedule for myself. This has really helped me plan my days, and stay onto of my pumping routine.
