Fun Pom Pom Color Matching Activity For Toddlers
As a preschool teacher and now a homeschooling mama, I love to keep most activities simple but still fun for my kids. Gone are the days when I spend a lot of time prepping and setting up activities only for them to have no interest in them at all. If that sounds like you too, check out my recent blog post on 15 Simple Activities You Can Set Up In 3 Minutes Or Less.
My son is starting to learn his colors, and he is even beginning to match them. So I am on a journey to create simple activities that support his color recognition and matching. He really enjoyed this one, and I have added it to the shelf in their play area so he can explore it whenever he is ready.

Everything You Need To Recreate This Activity
If you have little ones at home, I am sure you already have most of the supplies on hand. If you do not, I will include links to Amazon for the items used in this activity.
- Popsicle sticks
- Dot stickers or markers to create the circle on the popsicle sticks
- Pom Poms in small to medium sizes
- Tongs for added fine motor practice

Adding Dot Stickers To Popsicle Sticks
I prefer to use dot stickers for this activity. Depending on how wide your popsicle sticks are, you can use dot stickers. However, if you have smaller popsicle sticks, you can use markers to create the circles, which works just as well.

Adding This Activity To Their Shelves
We have a designated play area in our living space, so I decided to add this activity to that shelf for my son. This way he can grab it and play with it whenever he wants to. Here is what I used and how I displayed it on the shelf.
I used an old tray to hold the entire activity and a small container for all the pom poms. It has been fun watching him grab this activity and explore it whenever he feels ready.

Simple Instructions
- Gather all the items needed for this activity.
- Start by placing the dot stickers on the popsicle sticks, or use a marker to create circles on the sticks.
- If you want to add a fine motor element, include a pair of tongs.
- Find a small tray and a cup to keep everything together and organized.
- When introducing new activities, I always like to demonstrate first to give my kids a clear idea of how to set it up.
Why This Activity Works So Well
If you work with kids or have kids, then you know toddlers learn best through hands on play. This activity encourages exactly that. They get to grab the pom poms, sort them by color, and even use tongs to match them to the popsicle sticks. Not only are they learning their colors, but they are also getting a real hands on experience, which is perfect for toddlers.
This activity helps toddlers build the following skills.
- Basic math skills, color and sorting
- Fine motor skill practice
- Independence and focusing
- Eye to hand coordination
- Color recognition and matching
Extended Learning Ideas For This Activity
I love when an activity can naturally extend into more learning, and this pom pom color matching activity for toddlers is one of those simple ideas that can grow with your child.
- Sort pom poms by color and size.
- Count the pom poms on each stick, or match the number of pom poms to a number written on the popsicle sticks.
- Hide the sticks around the house to create a fun little game of hide and seek.
