As an Early childhood educator, I have created a lot of sorting activities to do with my students and now my children. So it’s safe to say I know a little bit about creating sorting activities for toddlers and, most importantly, engaging for toddlers.
Why Are Sorting Activities Good For Toddlers?
Sorting activities for toddlers act as the prerequisite for mathematics and early literacy. Sorting activities develop toddlers’ fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination and help with developing organizational skills and how to categorize.
Having your toddler do sorting activities teaches them to notice differences and similarities.

8 Super Easy Sorting Activities For Toddlers
With all the sorting activities I’ve done over the years, I compiled a list of my favorite sorting activities for toddlers, and These are easy activities for parents to set up; as a busy mom, I get that spending a ton of time prepping activities isn’t ideal for most.
Sorting Small Textiles: I found these adorable fruit erasers in the target dollar section, but any small textiles will do. Offer some small containers for sorting!
Sorting Picture Cards: Sort cards based on the matching color. These particular sorting cards are from a Shop on Etsy.
Sorting Beans: Using dry beans, sorting by color.
Sorting Shape Cards: Sorting Shape Cards by the matching shape
Sorting Flowers: Using flowers of the same color, sort them according to their color.
Sorting Popsicle Sticks w/ Magna Tiles – With Magnatiles formed into cubes, sort popsicle sticks into the matching color cube.
Sorting Coins – With Pennies, Quarters, and dimes, sort each coin into the matching category.
